You say this is a surprise event but seniors know about it, how is it a surprise?
Yes, the students know about the traditional event but they don't know the destination or activities so this is the "surprise". Those are all planned out by the PG committee months in advance. Usually seniors are given a survey as to what they would like do and the PG committee uses the results to plan a safe event.
The committee also discusses safety or other issues before they book and sign contracts for any place/location or vendor or bus company.
Every year it is different and is based on what did or did not work in previous years. Knowledge of committee members from previous years (older children who have graduated and had a PG experience) and/or knowledge of other Project Graduations from relatives, friends, or work colleagues help define the PG committee's decision.
Can Seniors bring a date to this event?

Is it mandatory that a senior class member attend this event?
No, any senior can decline the invite and not hand in a permission/agreement slip.
Some students do have other commitments on the following day, Saturday (ex: work, college orientation, previous travel plans, etc).
Some students decline because they are not interested.
The PG committee plans and hopes 100% of the senior class can attend but this is not always the case. How do you know how many students are attending?
Most of the class will attend as it will be their last activity before all heading down their life paths. Students who are attending are given permission slips or disclaimers from the vendors to sign and bring back with a due date. If a student fails to bring back the signed permission slips, they are not allowed to attend. Usually, the exact number is known a week or so before graduation when all the permission slips are due.

Some years, parents may be asked to supplement the cost if there are not enough funds (due to lack of activities or poor sales or attendance of events).
Do parents have to sign anything?
Yes, if your child is going to go, permission slips and agreements ("papers") are handed out several weeks in advance, and signed by both parent and student. The rules and regulations of the permission slip and agreements must be obeyed so it is the responsibility of the parent and student to review these papers carefully when they get them.
All information must be complete on the forms (contacts, phone numbers, emergency info, insurance companies and policy numbers etc.).
Where do they go?
As stated, this is a surprise event planned by the parents and funded by all the fundraising activity in the previous months of their senior year. The event destination or activities depends on how much money is raised and what can be afforded with those funds.
Usually the students leave after graduation, go home and change, pack a few necessary things that they are told to bring, come back to school and hired buses take them to and from their destination(s). The event usually starts at 9 pm and ends at about 5 am. It is an all nighter chemical free party with plenty of food and activity plus prizes/lotteries/raffles.
Please note: Before boarding the bus, students do go through a security check.
